This Central Drain Filter is used to filter water that is re-circulated around your dishwasher.

It is an important part of the inner workings of your dishwasher and its purpose is to trap dirt, food and other particles that are left behind from the cycle. If you leave bits of food on your dishes before you put them in the dishwasher, these can cause the filter to become clogged up and when this happens the filter can become worn out.
